GOVERNMENT / MILITARY NURSE JOB FAQs
1. What are the requirements of having a job as a nurse with the Government?
You MUST be a United States Citizen and possess a current license to practice in your profession. In addition, you must provide consent to a government-administered background check.
2. Where are these job opportunities located?
While government demand for nurses extends throughout the US in a variety of environments, the most popular opportunities are located in: Veteran Administration Hosiptals, Military Hospitals and Indian Reservations.
3. Must I possess a State License in the state the hospital /military base exists?
In most cases, you only need to have a current, unrestricted license; however, some government entities will require a license in the state of the facility location. Your recruiter will gladly share this information with you upfront.
4. What are the similarities and differences of working in a Government Facility?
Government facilities share civilian healthcare providers’ commitment to quality care and therefore provide similar schedules and workloads of public hospitals and clinics. However, the VA, military, and Indian Reservation health systems operate a unique care delivery program with which you may be unaccustomed to. Government nursing job opportunities are ideal for people that excel in a new environment and are able to adapt to change. Many traveling nurses say government opportunities have unique benefits, such as the integrity and honor that comes with serving veterans and active military personnel.
5. What types of openings exist in these Government Facilities?
- Registered Nurses of all specialties
- LPN’s, Radiology (all modalities)
- Sonographers
- Nurse Practitioners
- Physician Assistants
- Surgical Technologies
- Respiratory Therapists
- Physical Therapists
- Occupational Therapists

5. How long is the application process?
After submitting an application prior to a deadline, applicants tend to hear something within two to three weeks. Additional paperwork is often required after an interview. Your recruiter will have more information about the specific application you’re interested in.
6. How long are Government nurse job assignments?
Government assignments provide the widest range of availability, lasting between eight weeks to one or more yeas. (Often travelers find themselves negotiating a new contractor after a short assignment and stay for a year or longer!)
7. Why are two criminal background checks required?
As a Joint Commission Certified organization, we conduct criminal background checks for every applicant and government institutions conduct an exhaustive criminal background check.
8. How do I search government opportunities by location?
We continually update our online database of government opportunities. Click here to view the latest offerings.
9. How firm are the deadlines?
Government institutions have a no-exceptions policy regarding deadlines. Your recruiter will inform you of a facility’s required paperwork and all deadlines. Please note that all submissions are time marked: if a facility requires paperwork by noon, a submission at 12:01pm will not be accepted.
10. Are government application processes always lengthy?
Paperwork submitted for a government opportunity is good for one year, so applying for another opportunity in a couple of months will not be as exhaustive. VetPro qualified professionals (for VA hospitals only) are eligible for an expedited hire process since all VetPro qualified professionals’ credentials are contained within the VA system.
